Research Infrastructure Core (RIC)

The purpose of the RIC is to provide the administrative structure, instrumentation, and expertise needed to perform biomedical and health disparities research in the urban setting of Baltimore. Research to address health disparities requires a multifaceted approach given that inequities in health outcomes are observed in diseases whose mechanisms involve complex interactions between genes and the environment. The RIC facilities will support research aimed at reducing addiction, infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes and to better understand the role of food security in health and disease, to promote health informatics, among others. Based on the current and future research needs of Morgan State University, the three Core Research Facilities (CRFs) include:

  1. Animal Research Core
  2. Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Support Unit (BBSU)
  3. Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) Research Core Laboratory

The Canvas course for RCMI, including an informational hub for all of the above Cores, is available here. Please email jacob.curtis@morgan.edu if you need access to the RCMI Canvas course.

Acknowledging the Cores in Publications

Please acknowledge the support of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in publications that result from the use of these facilities. Note that acknowledging grants and fellowships is required by many funding agencies and research institutions. Example: The authors acknowledge the use of core facilities supported by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities through grant number 5U54MD013376 and National Institute of General Medical Sciences through grant number 5UL1GM118973.

Budgeting for Continued Use of the Core Facilities

To help us maintain the multi-user equipment, please budget for core usage fees in grant applications. The Core managers are available to assist with budget estimates for the different pieces of equipment and technologies. The "Equipment and Other Resources Page" for grant applications is available upon request.

Please also note that Core personnel are available to assist with proposal development, including answering questions on the capabilities of technologies and experimental design.
